Anger is often seen as a “bad” emotion. We are taught from a young age not to express our anger or we will upset the other person. But what about the upset you are feeling? Anger is your greatest clue that something isn’t right. To deny it is to disempower yourself.
Buddha said, “Holding on to anger is like swallowing poison and expecting the other person to die”.
When we swallow our anger, the energy of that feeling has to go somewhere. So it lies deep inside us like a drop of poison. Every time we experience more anger that drop grows until eventually we are filled to the brim with anger. I’m sure you can imagine what comes next…BOOM!
We explode and let our anger dictate our behaviour, our choices, our interactions with others, our thoughts and how we feel. Most people will also experience physical symptoms such as high blood pressure, an upset digestive system, unexplained skin rashes, coughs, colds, migraines…literally any kind of physical dis-ease you can think of. It’s not pretty or fun and it’s inevitable that we begin to judge ourselves for the fallout.
So how can you release old anger and start using your current anger constructively?
For old anger, practices such as meditation, tapping, yoga, energy healing, hypnosis etc are fantastic. They work with the energy of anger, helping to process and release it. For current anger, I have a wonderfully simple framework called Transactional Analysis which offers an understanding of what is going on at a psychological level. When you understand this, it makes it easier to pause in the moment, understand what is at the root of your anger, look at the bigger picture and choose how to respond instead of react. When you embrace the practices above, such as meditation, it makes pausing in the moment a lot easier to do.
